Respect the Fish

The Bass Philosophy: Handle with Care

Every great fisherman knows — the respect you show the fish says more about you than the size of your catch. Whether it’s a monster largemouth or a small schoolie, how you handle that moment makes all the difference. “Respect the Fish” isn’t just a phrase; it’s a promise we make every time we set the hook.

Fishing is more than a sport — it’s a connection. Every tug on the line, every ripple on the water, is a reminder that we’re sharing this space with something wild, alive and beautiful.

That’s why real anglers know: it’s not just about the catch, it’s about how you let it go.

Catch and Release — The Right Way

The moment you bring that bass boatside, the clock starts ticking. The way you handle those next few seconds determines whether that fish swims away strong or struggles to survive. At Big Bass Miami, we believe catch and release isn’t just a technique — it’s an act of respect.

Handle your fish with wet hands to protect its natural slime coat. That thin layer is its armor — without it, it’s more vulnerable to stress and disease. Use pliers or a hook remover to free the fish quickly and gently. If the hook is deep, don’t rip it out; cut the line close and let nature take its course. Most fish will shed the hook naturally in time.

Keep Them in the Water

The less time your fish spends out of the water, the better. Have your camera ready before the catch, lift the bass briefly for that photo, and then release it with care. Release gently until it kicks free and swims away.(Beware of Alligators). That’s the best picture of all — watching a healthy fish disappear back into the wild, strong and full of life.

Don’t Let Them Dry Out

Never lay your fish on hot decks, docks, or dry ground. Out of the water, a fish’s gills dry fast — and so does its chance of recovery. Keep it wet, keep it cool, and treat it like you want it to fight again tomorrow.

Respect the Fish, Respect the Future

Every release is a small promise — to the next angler, the next sunrise, the next generation. When you release a fish the right way, you’re giving something back to the water that’s given you so much.
