When anglers say “Florida bass,” they’re usually talking about the Florida largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides floridanus) — a subspecies of the largemouth that grows especially big in warm climates.

  • Range: Native to peninsular Florida, but stocked in many southern states, California, and parts of Central America because of its trophy potential.

  • Size: Can exceed 15 lbs, with the current Florida record over 17 lbs.

  • Appearance: Looks much like the northern largemouth but often has a deeper body, larger mouth, and more prominent lateral blotches.
